For Your Consideration
And although it storms and its raining outside
Pawns: Benedict and Vichee
All the people of the city
Status: ACTIVE PRIVATE OH HO HO HO
Still believe in the existence of the sun
Setting: Benedict's office just outside of the main lab area
And a forgotten melody and the birds in our hands
Scene: Benedict is wrapping up an appointment when he receives a surprise visit
A life without pain, is a life without joy, without fun.
“... and then he yelled at me like I was some kind of monster and tried to hit me... That was when I ran...” The poor boy sobbed into the tissues that he had already balled up in his hand. Ben watched him, face blank of emotions and of genuine interest. A job was a job, though, and he was not going anywhere.
“Clearly, you have over thought this, Mr. Dowite. He yelled at you only out of fear. He wouldn't have hit you if you had stayed. He was trying to scare you away to keep you from being hurt. That is what your story is telling me.”
The boy looked at him, new thoughts having been implanted into his head. His father's reasons were unknown to him in truth, but he couldn't tell the child that. It wasn't his job. He looked at a miniature taper candle that was almost completely burnt out on the desk. A candle for each child who came in. That was how long they had for each visit. They could leave whenever but once the candle was out, it was time for the next person. This kept people from using it as a reason to skip class. He looked down at the notepad in front of him and wrote down a few notes. 'Need further treatment. Medication possible. Could do with more food.' He regarded the skinny child with a sigh.
“And for the sake of the angels above, eat more at lunch or you will waste away before you can be helped and saved. Now, go on. I'm pretty sure the lines will be long if you don't hurry. If someone stops you, tell them you were sent to see me and that you have permission to eat early. Doctor's orders.”
The kid nodded and left as he finished up the last bit of the report on this new patient. He had a lot of short term trauma damage caused from his awakening that he wouldn't let go to cause it was tall he had. It shouldn't take more than a week to get him beyond this with enough poking and prodding. Ben prided himself on his work and his ability to make people think whatever he wanted him to think. That is what made him one hell of a psychologist. After all, if he couldn't do that, what kind of psychologist would he be? He closed the folder and pulled out the drawer on his desk to place it in the correct place.
It might be nice to know the lay out of his office, no? Upon entering the door, his desk is before you, books and papers cluttering it's surface in an organized mess. Bookshelves line the wall, books upon them being books written on singular topics such as anger, sorry, joy, and so on. Books that explained why people felt what they did. Books on self mutilation and the risks, on self torment and the damages, and on everything else one would want to know about the mind including what lobes were in the brain and what they controlled. Buried under all the papers was a small radio, replaying one song over and over again. It helped him to think and to hollow out his mind and his heart from everything. Well... almost everything...
He put out the candle and poured the wax into a metal bowl sitting in a cooler of water. He put a new candle in the holder that was well away from flammables and was ready to light it as soon as a person came around the door.
“Next.”
He called. Like this was some kind of DMV for the minds. That thought gave him the shadow of a smile for a second before it was gone again. Never again shall he smile.
