Basics
Your Chimera is an extension of your psyche, and is "born" into the Reverie in one of the five realms. It will match with the realm it was born into, and for all effects and purposes will act as if it is a native there. It will (in general) remember its birthplace, family, and past events as if it came to be as a normal native to the world, and the Reverie will remember it as well. Example, your Chimera is a military officer in the Nightmare--he will be remembered as if he had gone through training and everyone had known him, he will have a fully fleshed out life as he needs to be 'part' of the world. But, your Chimera will also remember you, and your life. It will know that it is you and this world isn't "real" (in general). Just like being in a dream where you are someone else but you are aware that you are not supposed to be.
Birth Realm
The first time you were made into a Chimera, you were born into a realm. The Chimera was created to fit the realm you were closest to. USUALLY, this realm is the Illusion. It's the closest to the mortal realm and is just easiest to access, but some are born into other realms. If you are born into a realm, your Chimera MUST fit it. A person born into the Nightmare is not gonna be an elf druid, you see what I mean?
Questions & Answers
Am I stuck in my birth realm?
No. Travelling from one realm to the other in the course of one dream is almost impossible, though, because the trek is so long. Luckily for you, you can manifest in any realm any time you go to sleep. Some people favor one realm more than others, but not everyone does.
If we appear anywhere, what is the birth realm?
The birth realm is the first place your Chimera was ever created, so it is their realm of origin. It doesn't cut you off from any other realm, though.
