for here is where you grace the nameless.
Were I not so weak, could I even speak,

Before you pass by,
will you pause to break my heart?”

Varen is bred for looks. He is pretty, in a completely androgynous way. A change of clothes immediately changes the perception of the outside world looking at him. Varen has startling blue eyes whose pupils seem to blend and disappear into the iris. His hair is silver-white and long, reaching to the curve of his tail with its long, straight strands. His fingers end in sharp claws, and at the curve of his waist his tail extends back six to eight feet in white-gold scales, its short length a sign of his young age.
Varen, like most nagas of his type, can change his tail into human legs for periods of time, but it is uncomfortable and he prefers not to. His ears are long and sharp, a definition he got from his mother--or so they told him.
The way Varen carries himself is demure and docile, but not with shame nor self-loathing. He was raised and trained as a pet, but it was not with beatings or tales of worthlessness. It was merely a reality that he would be saddled with, and he took it like destiny.
A lack of willpower is the main defining feature of Varen's personality. He doesn't think for himself because he has been trained to listen to his master. When he arrived to Xan, he expected a very rigid life, where he ran quick chores and bowed to his master's will. Xan was a different thing altogether. In the time with his master, Varen has learned how to speak up and hold conversation on an almost equal level with anyone else, understanding that he is not simply an item to be owned and cared for on an intellectual level. Though it doesn't translate on an emotional one.
Varen takes pride in belonging to Xan, not seeing it as a weakness or something he desires to be 'freed from'. He understands that others perceptions of him may be effected by this, but nobody's opinion matters but his master's. Every emotion and facet of Varen's personality is based on the input and reactions of his master. He doesn't feel or think this is a bad thing, so he doesn't strive to change it.
Likes: Birds, flowers, silk, Xan's smile and scent, music
Varen has a keen sense of smell, hearing, and touch.. but his sense of taste and eyesight are slightly dull in return. It's not that he's blind, but he cannot see long distances and he is almost night blind, a trait uncommon for his race. He likes small birds, and would never eat one because of his fascination. He likes the smell of flowers and Xan, and has an extreme fondness for musical tones and enjoys singing.
Dislikes: Xan's frown, unpleasant scents, the dark, killing
Although a carnivore, Varen refuses to hunt for himself. He doesn't like killing or the death of other creatures--with absolutely one exception: anything (but small birds) that Xan kills is fascinating to Varen, and anything that would harm Xan is no longer classified as a living being. He would be a vegetarian if his body would allow it, but he is alright eating food that has been killed for him. He doesn't like the dark, preferring to travel by candlelight, due to his tendency to knock things over or run into walls.
When Varen hatched, he was chosen from his clutch as the most lovely of his siblings. As such, he experienced a different side to the raising of a pet than most other slaves did. Varen was not harmed, or worked hard, and his discipline consisted of careful lectures and communication. He accepted his fate early on, and was convinced that it was his destiny to become a lovely gift for his master, of whom the maids spoke frequently as they trained him to be a perfect specimen.
When he arrived, Varen was ready and willing to be that perfect specimen. He was dressed up, and was sure of what was in store. Kindness and indifference to position was not what he expected.
Over time, despite Xan's obvious intent to instill him with the basic ability to survive on his own, Varen carefully picked up the talents he could use while still flaunting the deficiencies that kept him dependent. He was not stupid, albeit unwise, and he knew that to become independent would mean possibly leaving the company of his master. In his own, sly way, he kept Xan leashed to him as much as he was leashed to him.
Because Xan is everything to him.
